I warned you the next project was going to be easy…so here I am…I finally made my very own infinity scarf. After having seen the beautiful knit version Ali made, Andreas uplifting Gap-tastic cowl, many more versions and tutorials…I just could wait no longer when I saw Kellis tutorial right after finishing my coat.

Vi avevo avvertite che il prossimo progetto sarebbe stato molto facile…eccolo qui… ho fatto anche io una sciarpa circolare. Dopo aver visto la bellissima versione di jersey di Ali, quella in maglia di Andrea e molte altre versioni… non ho potuto piu aspettare quando ho visto le spiegazioni di Kelli proprio dopo aver terminato il cappotto.

I had the perfect fabric in my stash…its a light wool knit (probably there is a better definition…but I dont quite know this) I had bought to make a top and some scarfs and had the right size leftover.

Avevo la stoffa adatta a disposizione…una lanetta (che sicuramente non si chiama cosi) che avevo comprato per fare un top e delle sciarpe. Me ne rimaneva proprio la misura giusta.

Its not a knit though so it doesn’t stretch at all…and it stays put and thick as you see it.

I was planning to knit a cowl but this option was much faster.

Il tessuto non e elastico pero e rimane bello sostenuto come lo vedete nelle foto.

Avrei voluto fare una sciarpa a maglia ma questa opzione e stata molto piu veloce.

I love the result…I often get a sore throat so I like to wear a scarf. The color is very versatile…not to mention I can wear it with my new coat and its very handy in the current freezing weather!

Here is my self-drafted Peter Pan collar I wrote about. Actually the whole pattern was drafted from scratch. If you ever made a princess seam dress you can turn it into a coat.

After having read on Fashion incubator about the need draw both undercollar and upper part, I am fully convinced the result is much better. One remark..I should have made the upper collar wider, it would have been nicer.

Ecco il collo bebé che ho disegnato…in realta’ anche il modello del cappotto e’ disegnato da zero. Se avete fatto un vestito con queste cuciture, potete trasformarlo in un cappotto anche voi.

Dopo aver letto su Fashion incubator che il collo deve avere la parte inferiore leggermente piu’ piccola, mi sono convinta che il risultato e’ effettivamente migliore. Un solo appunto..Il collo superiore doveva essere piu’ largo…sarebbe stato piu’ carino.

The sleeves were an area where another great sewing blog and super-talented person came in handy: Sherry had a superb RTW Tailoring sew-along which I highly reccommend. Eventually I only put the sleeve head but no shoulder pad. My shoulder are wide already and I didn’t want the extra bulk.

Per le maniche ho avuto l’aiuto dei blog di cucito e di persone come Sherry che con il suo corso passo passo sartoriale mi ha dato molti consigli…vi consiglio di dargli un’ occhiata. Io non ho messo la spallina ma solo il rinforzo visto che le mie spalle sono gia’ larghe.

Sherry was so kind to reply to my questions by email. She agreed for me to share this info with you so here they are:

Sherry ha anche risposto a delle domande via email e mi ha detto che potevo condividerle con voi:

Question 1: Do you iron your allowances towards the shoulder inside (e.g. the neck) or towards the sleeve/arm?
Answer: My seam allowances face towards the sleeve/arm, but I don’t iron them. The seam at the sleeve head shouldn’t be pressed flat, it should roll. The sleeve head wadding will sit between the sleeve head and seam allowances. I do press the stitching line from the inside with both layers together, and I think there is a photo me showing this with the tip of the iron.

Domanda 1: Striri i margini verso il collo o verso l’esterno?

Risposta: i margini sono rivolti verso la manica ma non li stiro. La cucitura del colmo della manica non deve essere stirata ma deve arrotolarsi. Il rinforzo della manica va messo tra il colmo e’ la cucitura. Stiro la cucitura dall’interno con i due strati insieme. Credo ci sia una foto in cui mostro che la stiro con la punta del ferro

Question 2: Do you serge or zig zag your seam allowances? If so, before or after setting the sleeve? Do you serge layers together?
My fabric is fray-prone…that’s why I am considering it
Answer: I don’t serge on a tailored jacket that will be lined. Any parts that are fused will not fray. If your fabric is particularly fray-prone, I would tend to hand-overcast the unfused edges after inserting the sleeve, as serging could make it more difficult to ease the sleeve head.

Domanda 2: Rifinisci i margini di cucitura con la taglia e cuci o zig zag? Lo fai prima o dopo aver montato la manica? Unisci i margini della manica e della spalla insieme? La mia stoffa si sfilaccia, per questo volevo saperlo.

Risposta: su una giacca sartoriale che andra’ foderata non passo la taglia e cuci. Le parti con teletta non si scuciranno. Se la tua stoffa si sfilaccia molto, passerei dei punti a mano dopo aver montato la manica. Passare la taglia e cuci potrebbe rendere difficile assemblare la manica.

Question 3: Do you clip the sleeve allowances at the curves?
Answer: I don’t clip anywhere around the sleeve. As mentioned above the seam allowance above the front/back sleeve notches should face the sleeve, and the underarm portion should stand vertical, so clipping is unnecessary.

I thought these answers were great and I hope they can be helpful for you too.

Domanda 3: Fai tagli sui margini intorno alle parti curve della manica?

Risposta: no. Come ti ho spiegato i margini del colmo della manica devono essere rivolti verso la manica e la parte sotto l’ascella deve rimanere verticale, quindi non e’ necessario farlo.

Le risposte sono state utilissime per me e spero possano esserlo anche per voi.

I chose these buttons because they had a vintage look. I added a smaller one below the collar together with an hook and eye to get a more precise look.
I would have like to make bound buttonholes…but the idea came too late in the process (as Karen confirmed) so I resorted to hand-made buttonholes.

Ho scelto i bottoni per il loro look retro’. Ne ho aggiunto uno piu’ piccolo sotto il collo insieme ad un gancetto per far chiudere meglio il colletto.

Avrei voluto fare le asole ad occhiello (si chiamano cosi’) ma ci ho pensato troppo tardi e alla fine le ho fatte a mano

For the lining I decided to go wild and use a wintery print. I know I should have aligned the  design in the different pieces but it was getting too time-consuming and I gave up.

For the first time I bagged out the coat fully so it’s completely machine sewn. Again I used Sherry’s bagging out tutorial and Fashion incubator’s bagging tutorial to attach the slevees. Their explanation made the result so much more professional.

Per la fodera ne ho scelta una fantasia con un disegno invernale. So che avrei dovuto allineare il disegno ma ci mettevo troppo e ho lasciato stare.

Per la prima volta ho cucito il tutto a macchina usando le spiegazioni di Sherry e quelle di Kathleen. Grazie a loro il risultato e’ davvero professionale.

And finally the back view in a beautiful snowy weather…northern Italy is covered by snow.

And lastly the front…you can see it from my face that I was extremely happy to finally wear my coat. Next day I proudly wore it to work (after ironing the hem better!)

E per finire il davanti…come si nota dalla mia faccia ero davvero contenta di poter indossare il cappotto. Il giorno dopo me lo sono messo per andare in ufficio (dopo aver stirato meglio l’orlo)

Slowly but surely my Michele 60s-style coat is coming along.
It has been taking longer than initially planned as I wanted to apply some couture techniques, take my time at pressing every seam and serging the fray-prone wool.

Pian pianino procede la produzione del mio cappotto anni 60 modello Michele. Ci sto mettendo piu’ del previsto perché ho cercato di usare tecniche sartoriali, stirare ogni cucitura e passare ogni cucitura alla taglia e cuci visto che la stoffa si sfilaccia facilmente.

And of course I having been drafting the collar! Thanks so much for your tips and suggestions. I went with what the majority suggested…the double Peter Pan collar…although it was a difficult choice to make.

Poi ho disegnato il collo. Grazie a tutte per i consigli e suggerimenti. Alla fine la maggioranza ha vinto…ho fatto il collo alla Peter Pan. Anche se le altre opzioni mi piacevano altrettanto.

Since I had never done it before I used Patternmaking for fashion design, which is thankfully cheaper in Europe than in the US and even more so via the Amazon sellers.

Non avendolo mai fatto ho usato il libro Patternmaking for fashion design, che per fortuna in Europa e’ piu’ economico che negli USA e ancor di piu’ se lo compri dai venditori autorizzati Amazon.

L’altro motivo per cui a volte sono stata piu’ lenta del previsto sono proprio le tecniche sartoriali di cui sopra…come attaccare la fodera delle maniche al cappotto.

See the mess? It’s because I actually messed up the sleeves and attached them the wrong way around…SEVERAL TIMES! I know…it’s bad! Shame on me. Especially since I was actually paying attention, checking and only then sewing…and realizing afterwards I had to reach for the seam ripper!
I hope to finish off my coat this week.

Thanks to this mishap I had the pleasure to exchange a few emails and get to know the amazing master tailor Paco Peralta. Not only is he amazingly talented but he is also very generous.
Together we decided that we should organised a joint giveaway for all the Sewing Princess readers and Paco fans. In fact, Paco was so kind to send me a second package to the correct address so I eventually ended up having two sets.

Che ne dite? Mi ero stufata dei capelli lunghi e li ho tagliati. Dovete sapere che sono una di quelle persone che non riesce mai a trovare il taglio giusto e vorrebbe avere una persona a disposizione per sistemarle i capelli la mattina prima di andare in ufficio…E’ bello sognare!

I hate spending time styling my hair so I am always look out for a quick and practical style. Yet, I’ve always been jealous of those women who always seem to have the perfect hairstyle even after the gym or after a day skiing. Not me for sure!

Odio perder tempo a sistemare i capelli, quindi cerco sempre dei tagli pratici e veloci. E ho sempre invidiato quelle persone che sembrano avere i capelli perfettamente in ordine anche dopo la palestra o una giornata sulle piste. Di certo non e’ il mio caso!

The decision to get it cut was taken on a whim, actually. I can be very impulsive at times. When I was visiting my family over Christmas, my partner was going for a trim…and I decided to join him. The look you see in this pictures is totally homemade… So, it’s not how it was originally styled when I got out of the hairdresser. He had styled it straight with ends facing outwards. Pity I didn’t take a picture. I tried very hard to do it at home, but since my hair is wavy I need to use a straightener…which I try to avoid… so here is the result I could manage with my hairdryer and a Tigi product, Bed Head manipulator.

La decisione di tagliare i capelli e’  stata piuttosto impulsiva…in effetti a volte lo sono. Quando sono andata dai miei a Natale, il mio compagno ha deciso di tagliarsi i capelli… e io l’ho seguito. La pettinatura della foto e’ casalinga… Il parrucchiere li aveva fatti lisci con le punte all’infuori. Purtroppo non ho una foto. Ho cercato di fare lo sesso a casa, ma con i capelli mossi devo usare la piastra…cosa che cerco di non fare. Quindi questo e’ il risultato che riesco ad ottenere da sola con il phone e il Bed Head manipulator.

A comfy yet fashionable top originally from Italian fashion design brand Carla G

My sister bought a knit top last season and I knocked off the pattern (hope they won’t mind!). Then I was lucky enough to find some double knit jersey in several color combination…and I made 3, one for me, one for my sis and one for my mom.

As you can see the style is very simple and straightforward. I normally wear the top with a necklace  to add some volume…but the picture was taken on a very housework-intensive weekend

The detail I like the most…which was also the most sewing engeneering intensive is the waist area

As you can see there is a hole…which needs to be assembled in the right sequence…otherwise you can’t turn the sleeves out. Believe me!!! I tried several times in a tiny mockup before getting the technique right.

After breaking the code…I was ready to sew three in a whim using my serger.

By the way….see the long shapeless hair in the picture? I was fed up and I chopped them off yesterday…I feel a bit like Amy from Quixotic Pixels I was less brave then her though… So stay tuned for a style change.

I have been pondering about buying an embroidery unit for my sewing machine. Geeky as I can sometimes be I love the idea of connecting the computer to my sewing machine and sending a design instructions that magically get embroidered on a piece of fabric.

Unfortunately when I bought the machine I mistakenly thought I could just do this without any optional accessories. Big mistake! Apparently you need an embroidery unit.

What’s the problem with that?

First, it’s super expensive.

Second, I don’t see myself embroidering on a regular basis. At most I would be doing a monochromatic embroidery like I did on my jeans pockets

Why am I considering it?

The machine is being discontinued. So I am afraid the embroidery unit will no longer be available.

Some shops are having discounts ranging to 25% off. This in Europe is quite a deal.

I would like to embroider large letters and more complex designs as in the above picture.

So, if you were sitting in a café with me what would you say? Have you ever considered an embroidery unit? Do you have any experience with it?

Disclaimer: I realize these are very trivial thoughts in the current economic climate so excuse me for that.

And I am sharing it with you in case you need a little present to yourself or a friend…or want to give a hint to your family

While at Ikea, I came across this super cute and practical sewing kit. As you can see it includes: 1 pair of scissors, a thread snipper,  seam ripper, seam gauge, painting template, 2 tailor’s chalks, needle threader, tape measure, 3 thimbles, safety pins, a box of pins and assorted needles. I always meant to make one to carry around but it was really convenient to find one that includes all these nifty accessories.

Ultimamente non ho cucito molto né sono riuscita a fare le foto dei vestiti che ho terminato.

Quindi sono entrata in modalità regali e ho comprato qualcosa per me… almeno così non devo preoccuparmi che sia gradito

Ve li faccio vedere così se volete farvi un regalino o ad un’amica, o volete dare qualche idea ai vostri cari…vi viene qualche idea.

Da Ikea ho scoperto questo pratico kit per cucito. Come vedete comprende delle forbici, l’accessorio per tagliare i fili, il levapunti, l’accessorio per misurare, una mascherina con lettere, due gessetti, un’infilatore, un centimetro, tre ditali, spille da balia, spille e aghi. Ne ho sempre voluto fare uno da portare in giro ma è stato pratico in questo caso trovarne uno già fatto con degli accessori così utili.

The second pressie are two patterns from Paco Peralta a great Spanish Haute Couture designer. He had an offer last month and he was giving his newly designed pattern with every purchase. I have been dreaming about this jacket for a year and I could not resist any longer.

Il secondo regalo è doppio…dei modelli di Paco Peralta, uno stilista d’alta moda spagnolo. Aveva un’offerta il mese scorso e per ogni acquisto regalava una copia del suo ultimo modello. Sognavo questa giacca da oltre un anno e non sono più riuscita a resistere.

I am dreaming to make one in denim and another in silk dupioni. I have high expectations, you see.

Vorrei fare una giacca in tessuto jeans e un’altra in shantung di seta. Punto in alto come vedete.

And this is the new draped top pattern. I love the unique V design. Only the neckline is cut on the bias. The rest of the top is cut straight.

E questo è il suo ultimo modello, un top con collo cappuccio.  Adoro il particolare disegno dello scollo a V. Solo il collo è tagliato in sbieco, il resto è sul drittofilo.

How’s your sewing? Do you manage to keep up or are you caught up in work/life/family commitments?

I have already drafted the main part with princess seams and slightly A-line. But I am having second thoughts on the neckline.

So I would like to ask your advice.

The initial though was to have a Korean type neckline, just like the picture below and possibly close it with a button by creating a strip of fabric to go across.

Dopo i jeans ho cominciato a pensare ad un nuovo cappotto. Ho già fatto il modello della parte principale. Avrà dei tagli lungo la parte centrale  e sarà leggermente svasato. Ma sono indecisa sul collo.

Quindi vorrei chiedervi un consiglio.

Avevo pensato di fare un collo alla coreana come nella foto sotto e poi chiuderlo con un bottone facendo una striscia di stoffa trasversale
